Hugh Taft-Morales loves reading about American history, from first settlements to today. He is particularly interested in the civil rights movement. This past summer, Hugh took his first civil rights tour. Here, he offers some reflections on that profound experience, explaining why it affected him so deeply and how he processed “the power of place” at sites in Alabama and Georgia. Hugh also discusses the danger of reducing such tours to mere voyeurism and virtue-signaling. Hugh Taft-Morales is Leader of the Philadelphia Ethical Society, a humanist community dedicated to honoring the worth and dignity of every human being, cultivating character, nurturing ethical relationships and caring networks, building community capacity, and social justice.
