On Truth and Lying in a Nonmoral Sense

Join us to cover Nietzsche's essay on language, On Truth and Lying in a Nonmoral Sense.  It is a brief, accessible, and electric essay critiquing the representationalist philosophy of language that dominated his era and continues to be common wisdom in ours, even if the academy has since moved past it.  We will be pairing it with Chapter ii of Book III of John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding to examine the view that Nietzsche wishes to critique. 

Nietzsche was a late 19th century philosopher responding to the crisis of nihilism in post-Industrial society.  It is no exaggeration to say that Nietzsche is one of the most influential and profound Western philosophers of all time, let alone the 19th century.  He is often regarded as a key figure in existentialism, Western Marxism, and post-structuralism.  Outside of philosophy, his thinking has influenced literary theory, semiology, psychology, anthropology, and comparative literature, among other disciplines.
